The Westdale

The Westdale is Hamilton’s historic community cinema and cultural hub, showcasing independent and repertory films alongside a wide range of live performances, talks, and exhibitions. First opened in 1935 as the city’s first theatre built for sound motion pictures, the heritage-designated venue has been fully restored and modernized while maintaining its intimate character.

Owned and operated by the non-profit Westdale Cinema Group, The Westdale reopened in 2019 following an extensive community-led restoration effort. Today, it stands as a welcoming space where art, culture, and community intersect. The theatre features Canadian and international films, live performances from musicians and authors to comedians and magicians, and exhibitions that highlight local visual artists.
